Dad Gets Jail for Filthy Home Found After Son, 2, Shot

A Pennsylvania man will spend up to two years' incarceration for letting his kids live in deplorable conditions, which police discovered when his 4-year-old son accidentally shot his 2-year-old brother while their mother napped.

The Meadville Tribune says 23-year-old Mark Whitman was sentenced Tuesday in Crawford County to 11 to 24 months, less one day. That enables him to serve his time in county jail, not state prison.

His wife, 24-year-old Tiffany Whitman, pleaded guilty last month to endangering the welfare of children and will be sentenced March 5.

Mark Whitman pleaded guilty in December to the same charge because of the Wayne Township home's condition, plus a misdemeanor endangerment charge for leaving the gun accessible to young children.

The couple's three children are now with relatives.

The 2-year-old is recovering, but his prognosis is unclear.
