Retiring Philadelphia School Crossing Guard Honored for 43 Years of Service

For 43 years, crossing guard Willie Fullwood has made sure children crossing a Philadelphia street on their way to school were safe.

On Thursday, the 85-year-old Fullwood was honored for her dedicated service.

A special ceremony of fellow crossing guards, community leaders and police officers was held at the 14th Police District.

Fullwood, who seemed surprised and overwhelmed by all the attention, said the children brought her back every day.

“I enjoyed crossing the children … just being there to represent the community,” Fullwood said.

Fullwood began her career with the Philadelphia Police Department School Crossing Guard on October 30, 1972. She was assigned to the 25th Police District to the intersection of 6th and Somerset Streets for three years. Willie was transferred on October 7, 1976 to the 14th District, where she has worked for the past 40 years.

For 40 years, she has crossed children from Anna Blakiston Day School and St. Anthanasthis.

“I thank the community, I thank the police district for allowing me to work this long,” Fullwood said.

Fullwood was asked what her motivation was each day getting ready for work.

“The kids. I felt like I was doing something worthwhile … I’m glad I was able to help them cross the street safely.”

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey offered praise to the retiring crossing guard:

“It may be impossible to count the number of children whose lives she made safer. But one thing is clear, come rain or shine, she’s been there with the mind of protector and the heart of a parent.”

Best of luck in your well-deserved retirement Ms. Fullwood!
