Councilman Backs off Plans to Move SVU to East Falls

Residents stood against plan to move Special Victims Unit to their neighborhood

City Councilman Curtis Jones, Junior says he is no longer backing a bill to move Philadelphia’s Special Victims Unit from its current location in Kensington to East Falls.

Neighbors were clear in the opposition during a contentious meeting on June 14th.

“I can no longer support moving forward with this project in this location due to the severe impacts that it would have on the surrounding communities” Jones said on Tuesday.

Jones cited concerns over traffic and proximity to a recreation center and neighborhood schools.

The new building on Scotts Lane would’ve housed SVU, The Department of Human Services and the Philadelphia Children's Alliance.

Other officials supported the move, saying it would be easier to serve sex-abuse victims by having all services under one roof.
