Corbett Signs Bill to Protect Student Athletes

The new law helps protect student athletes who suffer concussions.

Gov. Tom Corbett has signed a bill to help protect student athletes who suffer concussions.

Corbett's office said Thursday that the Safety in Youth Sports Act was one of several bills he just signed.

The new law requires coaches to remove students from games if they show signs of a concussion or traumatic brain injury.

Coaches also would be barred from putting a student back in the until he or she is evaluated and cleared in writing by a physician or a health care professional with proper training in concussions.

The bill also calls for better information about concussions for athletes and their parents, as well as training for coaches.
