Gov. Tom Corbett's top budget official says a partial federal government shutdown could eventually force the state to mothball programs and furlough employees.
Thursday was the federal government's 10th day in a partial shutdown.
The vast majority of about $20 billion in federal money that Pennsylvania's expecting this year is for health care for the poor and to aid low-income schools, and Budget Secretary Charles Zogby says that money isn't endangered.
He says Pennsylvania is managing other programs right now by delaying payments or using reserve cash.
But Zogby says the state will soon be unable to pay providers of federally funded social services such as subsidized child care, women's shelters or aid to pregnant women and infants.
Hundreds of federally funded state employees also may face furlough.
