Cop Killer Called “Evil, Remorseless” as Hearing Wraps Up

Prosecutors try to persuade jury to sentence Scrugs to death

Prosecutors seeking the death penalty for a man who admitted killing a Philadelphia police officer says the shooter is an “evil, remorseless killer.”

Deputy District Attorney Edward McCann is trying to persuade a jury to sentence 35-year-old Rasheed Scrugs to death for the February 2009 shooting of Officer John Pawlowski.

Scrugs pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on October 21, just as his trial was slated to begin. Scrugs admitted shooting Pawlowski after he and his partner arrived to investigate a report of an attempted robbery of a cab driver.

Scrugs was arrested after being shot while fleeing from police.

The defense is expected to present its closing argument Tuesday afternoon.
