Community Fights to Save Historic School

Gloucester City catholic school set to close in late June after 153 years

After more than a century and a half of shaping young lives a South Jersey catholic school will be closing its doors.

That is unless parents, students and alum win their fight to save their school.

A meeting will take place Wednesday night as the community of the Saint Mary Grammar School in Gloucester City, N.J. gathers to fight for their school.

Late last month, the Diocese of Camden announced that the 153-year-old school would close at the end of the current school year. In a letter to parents, Bishop Joseph Galante blamed declining enrollment and increased operational costs for the decision.

The school operated at a $150,000 deficit this year and was expected to lose $250,000 next year.

In a meeting last week a group of 70 parents and school officials decided to continue to fight for the school, according to a school press release.

Wednesday night's meeting takes place at 7 at the Gloucester Catholic High School.
