Christie Signs Bail Overhaul Legislation

Gov. Chris Christie is set to sign legislation aimed at overhauling New Jersey's bail system.

Christie was at Trenton City Hall Monday afternoon signing a bill that will allow judges to release non-violent suspects as they await trial even if they can't afford to pay.

Voters will also get to decide in November on a constitutional amendment that seeks to keep dangerous criminals behind bars by eliminating the right to bail.

The legislature passed both measures by wide margins this month after Christie called them back from summer break for a rare special session.

The measures have bipartisan support from Republican and Democratic lawmakers as well as groups like the New Jersey branch of the NAACP.
