Christie Says He Will Fight Del. River Dredging

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he will fight to stop a project to deepen the channel of the Delaware River, saying it's more important to protect the environment than to create a few jobs.

His announcement Monday came just minutes after the Army Corps of Engineers began its deepening project, which has been at the heart of lawsuits and political battles among three states for 12 years.

Officials in Pennsylvania say that making a 102-mile stretch of the river from the Delaware Bay to Philadelphia 45 feet deep -- instead of the current 40 -- will increase business at the region's ports.

Officials in New Jersey and Delaware say it could create environmental problems.

On Monday, New Jersey amended a lawsuit aimed at stopping the project.
