Gov. Chris Christie says he's confident that his plan to slash the state's pension contributions will receive a judge's approval, adding that he has no "Plan B" for balancing the state budget if it doesn't.
State lawyers have legal briefs due next week in response to unions who are challenging the governor's plan in court.
Last month, Christie called for cutting $2.5 billion in planned state pension contributions for public workers between now and June 2015. That came after tax revenues were far lower than he expected.
Christie says he has not heard other plans for dealing with the surprise budget gap.
Last week, unions for public employees began filing lawsuits. A court hearing is scheduled for June 25, just five days before lawmakers must adopt a balanced budget.
