Man With ‘Large' Knife Attacks People, Police at Delaware Mall Bus Stop: Police

A man was arrested following a knife attack at a bus stop outside the popular Christiana Mall in Delaware.

State Police Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale says 46-year-old Richard J. Williams Jr. pulled out a knife and tried to stab an unidentified man with a "large serrated kitchen knife" during an altercation Wednesday afternoon at the bus stop near the Nordstrom store at the Newark mall. When that man ran away, police said Williams then targeted a 22-year-old man, striking the victim's hand and wrist with the weapon.

Security staffers were able to keep Williams away from other potential victims until state police arrived, said investigators.

One officer suffered minor injuries in the ensuing struggle -- Williams lunged at troopers with the knife -- as authorities took Williams into custody after hitting him with a Taser, said police.

The 22-year-old victim was treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The injured officer was treated at Christiana Hospital and released.

Williams was treated by doctors at Christiana Hospital. He was charged with numerous counts, including second-degree assault, resisting arrest and weapons charges. He was sent to county jail in lieu of $73,050 bail. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.

The mall responded to the incident on its Facebook page: This incident took place outside of the center and no shoppers were harmed or injured. [[238427591, C]]
