Chinese Mummies Coming to Philly Exhibit After All

Previously canceled because China objected, exhibit will run for limited time

The Penn Museum says that its exhibit on China's silk road, which had many original artifacts pulled at the last minute by that country's government, will now open with a full complement of mummies and more, but only for a limited engagement.

The artifacts, part of the “Secrets of the Silk Road,” which opened last weekend at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Philadelphia, featured a pared-down exhibit after Chinese officials requested the items not be shown.

On Friday, the museum said that decision has been reversed and the current exhibit will close Feb. 13 so that many of the original displays, some of which are more than 3,800 years old, can be installed. The exhibit will reopen Feb. 18 and run through March 15.
