Child Unfazed After Falling Into Sewer

A little boy walking in West Philly fell right into the sewer through an open manhole Tuesday morning.

Kamarion Stewart, 4, was walking along the street near 43rd Street and Fairmount Avenue around 10 a.m. Tuesday when he fell into five or six feet into the hole, police say.

His mother Erica called the entire experience terrifying.

"I seen his face and his arms, that's all I seen," Stewart said as she described the ordeal.

Erica pulled her boy from the hole as police rushed to the scene.

Kamarion was taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to be checked out, but luckily only suffered a few scrapes and bruises. He was up and running by the late afternoon.

"It could've been worse, it could've been real worse," Stewart said. "Thank God I've got my son."

A representative from the Philadelphia Streets Department came out to inspect the now blocked hole Tuesday afternoon.

Individual utilities are responsible for ensuring their underground compartments are sealed, officials said. The rep said the department would pass along the incident to the proper utility.
