Child Brings Pellet Gun to Philly School: Report

The child brought the Pellet gun in a backpack, authorities say.

A 5th-grade student at a Philadelphia elementary school caused a ruckus by bringing a pellet gun to class Monday, authorities tell NBC10 Philadelphia.

Originally reported as a handgun by authorities and then a BB gun after, a school district spokesman told NBC 10 it was actually a plastic pellet gun with plastic pellets inside. The gun was brought to the John Whittier School on the 3000 block of North 27th Street, sources say.

The student began playing around with the gun, according to the spokesman. The spokesman also said the student shot another 5th grader in the leg though it did not leave a mark and the student was not injured.

A teacher noticed the student with the gun and informed an administrator. The student was reprimanded and suspended from the school. While no one was injured, investigators say some students were crying and distraught while the student displayed the pellet gun.

The John Whittier School is a kindergarten through 6th grade elementary school.

Police continue to investigate.
