Crews Fix Cave-in Near Rittenhouse Square

A street in Center City reopened more than a day after it caved in Monday night.

A broken service line caused the street to cave in at 17th and Walnut streets near Rittenhouse Square. The street was blocked off and a 12-story high rise apartment building on Walnut Street was without water Tuesday morning and afternoon as crews made repairs.

PECO crews worked to remove a service duct that was on top of the broken service line. Repairs were completed shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday and water was restored to the apartment building. The Streets Department then worked to re-pave the street, getting traffic moving again by midday Wednesday.

SEPTA's Route 2 bus, which operates southbound, was detoured off of 17th Street onto Broad Street due to the street closure.

No injuries or additional damage were reported.
