The annual Day of the Dead celebration is making its colorful comeback to the Penn Museum later this month.

The event, hosted in partnership with the Mexican Cultural Center, is part of the museum's "CultureFest!" and will feature music, crafts, dancing, hot chocolate, traditional "pan de muerto" ("bread of the dead") and a monumental altar for the dead.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their own altars and take part in an altar contest. The guidelines are as follows:

  • The competition is open to organizations, universities, companies and families.
  • The altars must be completed at the Penn Museum before the event kickoff time of 10 a.m.
  • Each participating group will receive up to 10 tickets to the event.
  • The altars must respect the traditional Mexican format and will be evaluated for presentation, creativity and originality.

The Day of the Dead celebration will be held Oct. 26 at the Penn Museum and will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
