Catchy Condoms a Hard Push to Prevent STDs

Positive condom wrapper contest hopes to prevent citizens from testing positive

In an effort to encourage condom use, the city of Philadelphia is pushing artists to submit positive condom wrapper designs for its annual prophylactic distributions throughout the city.

It’s a unique way for an artist to get ahead.

Inspired by a similar pleasing-prophylactic design contest in New York City, the head of the city’s disease-control division says that Philadelphia is targeting its high rate of sexually transmitted diseases.

A Philadelphia resident is 40 times more likely to have syphilis, six times more likely to have gonorrhea and five times more likely to have Chlamydia than citizens in the rest of the state. Because of this, the city wants to double the number of condoms it distributes from $1 million to $2 million in 2011.

"We're trying to push the prevention message," Carol Johnson told the Daily News. "We're looking for something bold to help promote the use of condoms."

The wrapper design contest has been extended to Jan. 14. The winning design will be chosen by online voters.

For specifics about the contest check back at Philly’s Public Health Department website.
