Tied Cat Dragged to Death in Ocean City

Feline found with rope tied around its neck and much of its flesh torn off

Authorities want to know who tied a rope around a cat and dragged the animal to its death in Ocean City, N.J. last week.

The Humane Society of Ocean City says the dead feline was found Wednesday near 50th Street and Haven Avenue with a rope -- similar to a clothesline -- tied around its neck. It’s believed that the animal was killed sometime overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

A veterinarian examination determined that about 50 percent of the 8-month-old black and brown female cat’s body was skinned to the bone from the dragging, authorities said.

The death shocked folks in the community.

“You don’t like to see anything to happen to children or animals because it’s really disgusting -- to think about what people are capable of doing,” said Bill Hollingsworth of the Humane Society.

Police say they will be in the area in the next few days to see if anyone saw anything suspicious.

The Humane Society was also hoping the owner of the pet would come forward since there are no missing cat reports matching the description of the cat in this case.

A $1,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person or people involved. Anyone with information should call the Humane Society at 609-398-2018.
