Casino Workers Protest ‘Poverty Wages'

Casino workers protested in front of Resorts Casino Hotel, claiming they're being asked to accept "poverty wages."

Casino workers say they're being asked to accept ``poverty wages'' as they negotiate new contracts with nine of the Atlantic City casinos. The contracts expire Sept. 15.

An estimated 2,000 workers protested Friday in front of Resorts Casino Hotel. The workers, represented by Local 54 of UNITE-HERE, returned on Saturday for a 12-hour protest.

Bob McDevitt, the president of Local 54, said Resorts was chosen for the protest because the casino set a bad example when it changed hands in December and cut longtime employees' wages by about $10 an hour.

Resorts' Chief Executive Officer Dennis Gomes says his company hasn't cut anyone's wages but instead hired back workers who lost their jobs when the casino was sold.

A spokesperson for Resorts also says the company’s offer is “competitive with the rates being offered at other casinos in the city.”
