Authorities say two would-be carjackers were captured after one of their victims slashed them with a box cutter.
Newark police say 19-year-old Nadir Morris and a 17-year-old boy flagged down the car around 9:30 a.m. Saturday and asked the three occupants for a ride. They agreed because one occupant knew the pair.
When the car stopped at an intersection a short time later, authorities say one of the suspects produced a handgun and demanded the victims give them the car keys, their cell phones and wallets.
The victims agreed, but one soon picked up a box cutter from the car's floor and repeatedly slashed Morris and the teen. All five people then fled the vehicle.
Morris and the teen face robbery, carjacking and conspiracy charges, along with weapons offenses. They were treated at a hospital for their wounds.
