Car Dealer Barbera Charged With Tax Fraud

Dealer accused of making personal purchases on dealership's dime

Is Barbera the best? Boy, the IRS doesn’t think so.

Popular car dealer Gary Barbera was charged Wednesday with filing false tax returns for his Chrystlerland and Dodgeland dealerships.

Barbera, 45, of Gladwyne, Pa., is accused of hiding income from 2002 and 2003 returns. U.S. Attorney Michael Levy says the man made personal purchases on the dealership's dime.

Levy says Barbera "cheated all Americans" for not paying his fair share of the tax pie.

"The license to run a business is not a license to avoid paying taxes like the rest of us," he said in a statement.

The total amount that was allegedly withheld is close to $78,000, Levy told KYW 1060.

If found guilty Barbera could be sentenced up to three years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine up to $250,000.
