Car Burns Along Busy Manayunk Street

Firefighters in Philadelphia were called in put out a raging car fire along a busy city street on Friday evening.

The gray Ford Taurus caught fire around 5:20 p.m. along Manayunk Avenue near Green Lane in the Manayunk section of the city, officials said.

Witnesses at the scene tell NBC10.com the car was smoking and small flames were coming from underneath the engine.

A passerby grabbed a towel and tried to smother the flames and a neighbor used a fire extinguisher, but the fire persisted. In the meantime, others called 911.

Firefighters were on the scene and dousing the flames with water in two minutes, according to witnesses.

The fire department said the fire was placed under control within 15 minutes. The cause of the fire is still unclear.

No one was hurt.
