Cancer Rates Down in Delaware

Fewer people are being diagnosed with cancer in Delaware, according to a public health official.

A public health official says cancer diagnoses in Delaware have decreased and so has the number of Delawareans dying from the disease.

The Delaware State News reports that Dr. Karyl Rattay, who directs the Division of Public Health, announced Thursday the release of the 2003-2007 Delaware Cancer Incidence and Mortality report.

In years past, Delaware was ranked number two in the nation for cancer deaths. The new report now places the state 12th. Rattay also said the state's cancer mortality rate decreased faster than the U.S. rate.

The report identified 23,509 cases of cancer diagnosed among Delaware residents from 2003-2007.

Even though the numbers are improving, Rattay said more work still needs to be done on cancer prevention.
