“Camden is Forcing Us Out”

It’s a city already struggling with high crime and unemployment.  Now, some Camden residents say they’re facing property tax reassessments they can’t afford.  And they packed a City Council meeting Tuesday night to make their point.

“They’re gonna take me out in a duffel bag, because I’m gonna fight them” said Eulisis Delgado.

But according to Mayor Dana Redd, the new taxes are unavoidable.

“The re-eval was mandated back in 2007 by the state that they city must conduct a re-eval of all its properties, both residential and commercial, here in the city of Camden.  This is not something that we could have averted or avoided” said Redd.

A plan for the county to take control of Camden’s police force also came under fire at Tuesday’s meeting. Officers fear they’ll have to reapply for their jobs at less pay and not everyone would be rehired.

"I think all municipalities are now faced with fiscal constraints and we're all looking for shared services in order to deliver the services that residents expect and deserve" said the mayor.
