Camden Will Put Security Cameras on Streets

New Jersey's most dangerous city may soon get its first network of security cameras.

Camden officials say Virginia-based Ciber has been hired to install and maintain the so-called "Eye in the Sky" system. The $1.8 million project will be mostly funded through prior commitments included in state and federal grants.

Company officials say it will take about two months to install the first group of cameras, but city officials haven't yet disclosed where they will be placed.

Police officers will be able to view and control cameras from both their in-car computers and at police headquarters.

Camden consistently ranks as one of the nation's most crime-ridden cities, and the idea of installing security cameras has been kicked around for nearly a decade.
