Buono to Homeless: ‘I Won't Forget You'

The Democrat running for governor tells residents of a homeless encampment near the Jersey shore: “I will not forget you.”

Sen. Barbara Buono spent more than an hour talking with residents of Lakewood's tent city Thursday afternoon. About 80 people live in tents in the encampment in the woods off Route 9.

The tour was designed to highlight the stories of people who have fallen through the cracks.

Buono says Gov. Chris Christie has ignored problems facing the poor and homeless during his first term.

Residents of the encampment have agreed with government officials on a plan to move after they are found homes.

The April agreement ended a seven-year dispute with Lakewood's government.

Steven Brigham, the camp's spokesman, says so far only three people have been found alternate housing.
