Boy Mauled by Dog in Port Richmond

Neighbor was forced to shoot the dog twice to end the attack

A boy was rushed to the hospital Wednesday morning after he was mauled by a dog.

The 10-year-old was walking along the 3500 block of Mercer Street in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia just before 8 a.m. when the attack happened, police said.

Neighbors who heard his screams immediately came to the rescue. A 46-year-old man shot the dog -- identified by authorities as an American Bulldog -- twice to stop the attack, police said.

The boy was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Hunting Park, police said. He was last listed in stable condition.

The dog died a the scene. Police are investigating.
