A 6 year-old boy is dead and his older brother is in critical condition following a Friday morning fire in Lakewood, New Jersey.

The fire broke out on the 600 block of Stirling Avenue just after 2 a.m.

When police first arrived, they found some of the family members standing outside, and the mother holding her screaming 2 year-old child. The father was seen running frantically back and forth in front of the burning house, his 8-year-old son standing there in his underwear.

Investigators say the mother told firefighters another child was trapped in the house, but when officers tried to get inside they were pushed back by heavy smoke and flames.

Officers then used a ladder to try and gain access through a bedroom window. When one of the officers broke the glass, he cut his wrist and got a shard of glass in his eye.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they discovered the 6-year-old boy unconscious in an upstairs bedroom. The child was brought outside and immediately given CPR. He was transferred to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The boy's older brother, who is 8-years-old, was burned and suffered smoke inhalation. He remains in critical condition.

Two officers and two EMT's were also treated for smoke inhalation. They're listed in stable condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials say it appears to have started in the area of a stove.
