NJ Woman May Have Sleepwalked to Her Death

Friends say 55-year-old Charlene Ferrero had a serious sleepwalking problem

A southern New Jersey woman with a reported sleepwalking problem was found drowned in a lake blocks from her apartment. Authorities say they have no evidence of foul play and may never know how she ended up there.

If toxicology results, due in three weeks, show Charlene Ferrero had a high amount of a sleep aid in her system, it may help crack the mystery, said Capt. Mark Nicholas of the Camden County Prosecutor's office.

But without that as evidence, as well as an eyewitness or video, the idea that Ferrero, 55, may have sleepwalked to her death in Newtown Lake would remain just a hypothesis, Nicholas said.

"I don't know if we'll ever know that," he told The Associated Press.

Ferrero was reported missing early Sunday. Her body was recovered from the lake the next day.

Cerini said her car was parked awkwardly at the apartment building and had fresh damage. Her cellphone was left on the lawn and her apartment was unlocked.

The flag at Starview Diner was lowered to half-staff in her honor.
