10 Questions: Bobby Hill, the Young Sensation Who Sang for the Pope

Usually at the age of 14 you’re in high school, joining math clubs, or playing sports. Well not for Bobby Hill of the Keystone State Boychoir. This 14 year old sang for Pope Francis during his visit to Philadelphia. After a last minute decision by choir director Stephen Fisher, Hill took the leap in front of thousands and sang Andrew Lloyd Webber's “Pie Jesu.” Lloyd Webber has said it's difficult to find a soprano with the ability to sing the notes purely and totally straight, but Hill NAILED IT!

After his introduction to the world, I had a chance to interview Bobby Hill at the NBC10 studios.

What was your initial feeling when you were asked to perform for the pope?

I was a little nervous, more excited, but I got a little more nervous after I found out I had to do it a cappella.

How are you dealing with all the fame that came so quickly?

I’m just staying with my family.

Who are some of your favorite music artists?

I listen to classical and pop.

What was the reaction from some of your classmates and family members after your performance?

I actually haven’t been to school yet. I did get a lot of text messages from friends and family saying I did a good job.

How has this new found fame affected your school work and personal life?

A lot I would say, we met with the president and he said I could take off a few days. Not the president of the United States, the president at my school.

The song you sang “Pie Jesu” by Lloyd Webber -is known as difficult. How did you deal with the pressure under such short notice?

I don’t think I had a lot of time to actually think about it. Oh and he [Andrew Lloyd Webber] posted about me on his Facebook.

What was the first thing you did after you arrived home from the festivities?

I was kind of over the moon and I went home, talked to some of my friends, and then went to sleep.

Have you had any surprising phone calls from celebrities, or public figures?

Not yet. I ran into people and they realized who I was. Like The Roots crew when I was down at the Jimmy Fallon set. Anderson Cooper met me at the Mass. I also met Charlize Theron and John Stamos.

Your only 14 years old, and what you did for the pope most people will never do in a lifetime. What do you see yourself doing 5 years from now?

I’d like to have a career in music, singing all types of music.

Word around Philadelphia is that you want to sing for President Obama next?

Yes! President Obama I would like would like to sing for you and bring the choir to the White House.
