Birdwatcher, Samaritan Rescue Boaters

Two men are safe after their boat capsized in a New Jersey recreation area thanks to the actions of a birdwatcher and a good Samaritan.

Strong winds turned the boat over at Spruce Run Recreation Area in Clinton Township on Thursday, sending Chris Coffe of Jackson and Justin Mulitore into the water.

Frank Sencher, who went to the area to watch birds, tells the Courier News of Bridgewater he called 911 and ran through the campground looking for someone with a boat.

“I found some campers with a boat, then I went back to keep a visual on the boaters,” Sencher told the paper. “They were way too far out for me to swim to. Knowing that time is always critical, the best thing I could do for these guys was to find someone with a boat.”

A Samaritan boater went out and rescued the men, who were wearing life jackets.
