Icy Conditions on I-78 Cause Crashes, Prompt Shutdowns

The morning commute was marred by several accidents on icy roads that included the closure of an interstate in Pennsylvania.

Authorities are advising drivers to avoid Interstate 78 in Berks County, Pennsylvania following multiple crashes and shutdowns due to icy conditions.

The Wolf administration says freezing rain and melted snow are causing icy conditions in many places in the commonwealth.

Multiple collisions along the I-78 corridor west of Allentown have been causing backlogs.

Officials said westbound lanes of the highway in Berks County were shut after one 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, and eastbound lanes were closed by another crash.

State police have sent troopers to work with local police and fire agencies to try to clear the scene as quickly as possible.

At about 5:30 a.m., on the Blue Route northbound near the West Chester Pike entrance, a delivery truck overturned, injuring at least one person.

Several hours earlier on the southbound lanes of the Blue Route near the Schuylkill Expressway, a second car overturned.

PennDOT officials told NBC10 they had approximately 100 trucks out overnight treating the roads. They anticipate being out treating roads for several more nights.

PennDOT says they have 182 trucks out during the day patrolling for icy spots.

PennDOT officials are asking drivers to use caution and slow down.
