Community Snatches Up Historic Property

A central Pennsylvania community has landed a property it has been eyeing for a decade.

The Centre Daily Times said Thursday that Bellefonte has purchased the historic National Guard Armory.

Borough manager Ralph Stewart said Bellefonte paid a little more than $750,000, outbidding Centre County government by nearly $20,000.

Stewart said potential plans for the property include moving its police and emergency services departments. The borough also will try to rent out part of the land to a private developer.

The property is zoned for retail, hotels, motels, professional offices and supermarkets.

The state began the sealed-bid process of selling the property in June. Fair market value for the property is listed at $915,000, according to the most recent appraisal.
