Beached Baby Seal Saved Down the Shore

Officials say recent coastal storms will beach more seals

A stranded baby gray seal was rescued on the 45th Street beach in Sea Isle Tuesday morning.

Officials from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine saved the male newborn seal, and brought it back to the center where it will stay for about a month before being released back into the ocean.

The seal was about two weeks old and still had some of its birthing coat on its rear flippers, center officials said.

Rescuers from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center believe the seal may have been born in Nantucket, Massachusetts and the last coastal storm caused him to lose his way.

Stranding Center officials expect to see more stranded seals along the Jersey Shore because of the recent storm’s oceanic disruption.

While the baby seal was slightly underweight, the prognosis for the little one is good, say his rescuers.
