Bartender Stabbed to Death in South Philadelphia

Witness walked in on early-morning robbery

Philadelphia police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a bartender in South Philadelphia early Sunday morning.

Investigators say the bartender was stabbed twice in the chest during a robbery at T-Barr's at the intersection of South 8th and Jackson Streets. The killing occurred at around 1:15 a.m. Sunday.

Friends and family tell NBC 10 the victim is 47-year-old George Fox.

Authorities say a witness walked into the bar while the robbery was in progress and witnessed the stabbing before fleeing to call police. When police arrived, they found the witness attempting to aid the bartender, who was later pronounced dead. An undisclosed amount of cash was missing from the register.

Friends say Fox was working as a favor to the owner when he was killed.

"I didn't like him working here because I thought something like this was going to happen," said Debbie DiAntonio, Fox's long-time girlfriend.

Fox's son, who did not want to give his name, visited the crime scene Sunday night.

"I just want whoever did this, just to come forward. Over money? They didn't have to take someone's life, it's not worth it...took him away from his family and everything, just come forward, that's all."

Detectives are reviewing surveillance video to try and identify a suspect.

Owners of the bar are offering a $1,000 reward to anyone with information in the case.
