Two weeks into the trial on the constitutionality of Pennsylvania's voter identification law, both sides profess confidence that they will prevail - but vow an appeal if they lose.
Commonwealth Court Judge Bernard McGinley put the trial on hold for a four-day weekend as lawyers prepare to make closing arguments next week.
That followed testimony by state officials, expert witnesses on statistics and communications and voters frustrated by the photo ID requirement.
The issue is where to draw the line between Pennsylvanians' right to vote and the state's interest in protecting the integrity of elections.
So far, the debate has been largely hypothetical, since the court blocked enforcement before last year's presidential election.
But the trial verdict will be a major step toward deciding whether it will take effect.
