Babysitter Sentenced for Death of Toddler

A Delaware County babysitter convicted in the death of a toddler faced her sentencing on Tuesday.

On December 11, 2011, David Miller Jr., a 2-year-old boy from Upper Chichester, was taken to the hospital where he died the following day. Authorities say he suffered head and brain injuries.

On December 30, 2011, police arrested Heather Hess, 24, who was babysitting the boy the day he was taken to the hospital. According to court documents, Hess told authorities she found the child unconscious with a bottle cap in his throat and tried to revive him. The medical staff said that explanation didn’t account for his injuries however. Prosecutors say the child was shaken violently and suffered blunt force trauma.

Hess was arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault and other related offenses. She was convicted on those charges last January. On Tuesday she was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison and five years of probation.
