Pennsylvania Baby Sitter Beats Infant, Causes Bleeding on the Brain: Police

A Pennsylvania baby sitter is facing attempted murder charges after an infant in her care was hospitalized with injuries that police said weren’t consistent with the fall the woman described.

Police arrested Lisa Weiler, 32, of Bethel, Pennsylvania on Monday after allegations of child abuse became apparent.

Berks County Children and Youth Services alerted Pennsylvania State Police to the possible abuse after a 14-month-old girl landed in Hershey Medical Center with a severe head injury and bleeding on the brain last Thursday, according to police.

The child remained hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday.

Weiler, who was watching the child at the time of her injury, said that the child struck her head during a fall inside a home on Frystown Road in Bethel Township, investigators said. Medical personnel disagreed, so police launched an investigation.

That investigation revealed the injuries appeared to be caused by physical abuse.

A Berks County judge arraigned Weiler on attempted murder, aggravated assault, simple assault and child abuse charges Monday morning. Weiler remained jailed, unable to post $500,000 bail, according to court records.
