Arsonist Targets PECO Station: Cops

A week after police found a suspicious device at the Holmesburg PECO substation, a suspect tried to ignite a transformer at the same station, according to investigators.

For the second time in a week, a suspicious incident has occurred at the PECO substation in Holmesburg.

On Tuesday, around 1:30 a.m., police and fire units were called to the station at 4601 Rhawn Street for a report of an arson fire or a suspicious “ignition device,” according to investigators.

Police say a suspect entered the substation by cutting through a wired fence. Once inside, police say the suspect tried to ignite one of the transformers by setting a small fire. The suspect then fled the area.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire. Fortunately there was no power outage and the building was not damaged.

Last Tuesday police found a one gallon red gasoline container at the same substation. Police say it appeared to have wires protruding from it and was placed up against a transformer. No word yet on whether the two incidents are related. Police continue to investigate.
