Fire Breaks Out in 7-Story Apartment Building

A kitchen fire caused the evacuation of a Lehigh County apartment building this morning.

The blaze began in the kitchen of a third-floor unit around 10 a.m. on the 900 block of Hamilton Street in the Center City area of Allentown, Pa.

Allentown Fire Department Captain John Christopher told NBC10's Doug Shimell that residents were already evacuating when firefighters arrived on the scene.

Firefighters let the building clear before entering the seven-story structure, Christopher said.

Once inside they were quickly able to knock down the blaze, getting the fire under control in about 10 minutes.

A female resident was hospitalized for minor smoke inhalation, Christopher said. No other injuries were reported.

There was no immediate word on what may have started the fire or how many people may be displaced.
