Amendola Not Surprised by Verdict

Jerry Sandusky’s lawyer plans to appeal

The lead attorney for convicted sexual predator Jerry Sandusky said Friday night he was not surprised by the verdict against his client.

The former Penn State assistant football was convicted on 45 child sex abuse counts.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola says Sandusky is disappointed by the verdict. Many of the charges carry mandatory minimum sentences that will keep the 68-year-old Sandusky behind bars for decades. Amendola calls it a ``life sentence.''

Sandusky did not testify in his own defense.  Amendola said that decision was a made after one of Sandusky’s adopted children came forward and said he was a victim of abuse. Matt Sandusky was prepared to testify against his father, said Amendola. Other family members were prepared to testify against Matt.  After that stunning development, Amendola decided not to put Jerry Sandusky on the stand.

“He reluctantly agreed not to testify and that resulted in Matt s not testifying and we felt that that might give Jerry an opportunity to be acquitted of some, if not all of the charges against him.”

Amendola said the prosecution handled the case in “an exemplary manner” and called the judge fair.

He says he will appeal.
