Alleged Tree Trimming Scheme Near Jersey Shore

Officials in Cape May County, NJ are warning of an alleged tree trimming scheme that appears to be targeting senior citizens.

Four people complained to the county Department of Consumer Affairs about Eric Moyer and the tree service he claims to own. The alleged victims say they paid for work that was never finished or not done at all.

Two told NBC10 Moyer insisted that they pay cash, up front.

"I think they're just scum" said Dorothy O'Briant.  The Lower Township woman says she's out about $16-hundred dollars. "I have social security and it's a lot of money" she said. "It hurts. I am in the hole."

Melissa Mathis said her 81-year old mother-in-law lost $900 dollars.

Lower Township Police charged Moyer with theft by deception earlier this year.  The case has not yet gone before a grand jury.

Moyer no longer lives at his last known address and our phone messages were not returned.

The owner of a reputable tree service with a similar name says he's heard from more than a dozen people who may have been victimized.  If you are one of them, the prosecutors office would like to talk to you.
