Alleged Gunman Leads Cops on High-Speed Chase

The chase began in West Philly and ended on I-95 in South Philly.

A man that lead police on a high-speed chase from West Philadelphia to South Philadelphia after shooting another man is in custody Wednesday morning, according to Philadelphia Police.

Police say that a 41-year-old man was shot in the knee by a 51-year-old on the 500-block of Paxon Street in West Philadelphia, around 3:45 a.m.

A patrol man driving by heard the gunshot and approached the victim who pointed to the suspect and told the officer, “That’s the guy who shot me,” police tell NBC Philadelphia.

The suspect fled in a vehicle beginning what would be a multi-neighborhood chase, leading police into center city, onto the Vine Street Expressway and I-95 south -- throwing his gun out of the car window along the way, according to authorities.

A K-9 officer recovered the gun.

Police tell NBC Philadelphia that around Packer Avenue on 95, the suspect rammed the car he was driving into three police vehicles. He then fled from the vehicle on foot before being apprehended by officers, possibly using a Taser.

“We got a dangerous felon off the street, we got another handgun off the street, and the shooting victim, the 41-year-old male, was only shot in the leg, so obviously, he’ll survive,” says Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The victim is in stable condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Police are investigating the shooting.
