Ailing Police Dog Put Down After 7 Years of Service

An ailing police dog has been put down after seven years of service in New Castle County.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports that the 10-year-old German shepherd named Monty had notched over 80 apprehensions and helped seize roughly $675,000 during his time aiding law enforcement.

The newspaper says Monty had lived with police Cpl. Steven Donahue for over a decade.

The dog was retired from the K-9 unit in 2016.

Master Cpl. Michel Eckerd of the New Castle County Police Department told the newspaper that "putting down a dog is hard on anybody."
