The mayor of Glenolden, a small Philadelphia suburb, has resigned after being charged with stealing more than $78,000 from customers at a funeral home he once owned, according to Delaware County borough.
Glenolden officials announced the resignation of Theodore Bathurst, 68, on Friday. He was mayor since 1994.
On August 21 Bathurst was charged with theft, receipt of stolen property, and related offenses on allegations that he paid operating expenses using money from a burial fund customers could pay into in advance.
According to court documents, Bathurst sold the McCausland-Bathurst Funeral Home at 202 Chester Pike in August 2007. At the time, he signed a document saying all pre-paid accounts were up to date and fully funded, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The current owner said she discovered that money was missing when she tried to access the escrow account of a client in March 2008.
Delaware County prosecutors say Bathurst defrauded customers over a nine-year period.
