Who Left Dead, Abused Dogs in Trash Bags?

An animal shelter is offering a $500 reward and police are investigating after several dogs -- most of them dead -- were found in black trash bags left along roads in the Poconos.

The Animal Welfare Society of Monroe says a small black dog was found dead in a bag in Stroud Township on Monday, though another found dog survived and is recovering.

A post on the welfare society’s website asked why the dogs were hurt and left so close to the shelter where they could have been helped:

“How could you do this? How could you tie one dog up in a trash bag and dump her in the woods to die, like she doesn't matter? How could you leave another innocent and starving dog to die with her? You actually had to drive past the AWSOM shelter to do this…why couldn't you leave them both in an outdoor kennel?”

The incident appeared to be isolated until three more dead dogs were found in bags, separately, in Gilbert, Jonas and Broadheadsville -- also along roads throughout Monroe County.

Richard Homar, a spokesman for the shelters, says “It sickens all of us here at AWSOM and we want to get to the bottom of this.”
