Abington Dispatcher, Officers Honored for Response to Murder-Suicide

Abington police officers and a dispatcher were praised Thursday for their actions during a murder-suicide in December of 2015.

Department of Public Safety Telecommunicator Jordan Brandy joined Abington Township Police Sgt Christopher Porter and officers Andy Gibbs, Drew Kent, and Troy Senne at the Abington Township Commissioners meeting Thursday. The group was given commendations for their response to the incident on December 23, 2015.

Brandy was the dispatcher for Abington Police that afternoon when she received a call about shots fired on Fairview Avenue. A short time later, she got a call reporting someone had been shot on Prospect Avenue.

The shooter attempted to flee the scene but was stopped as the four officers established a perimeter around his vehicle, officials said. After attempting to negotiate with the subject, Sgt. Porter realized he was about to take his own life and instructed the other officers not to return fire after hearing shots.

The chaotic incident lasted about 10 minutes but Brandy relayed important information calmly to police throughout. She was recognized as Telecommunicator of the Year in April by the Department of Public Safety.
