Abington Hospital Cancels Merger With Holy Redeemer

Abington Health announced their planned merger with Holy Redeemer will no longer take place.

The proposed merger of two Montgomery County-based hospitals has been canceled.

Back on June 27, Abington Health and Holy Redeemer Health System leaders announced that they had a letter of intent to merge into one regional health system.

On Wednesday however, Abington Hospital announced the merger would not take place. They released the following statement:

Abington Health and Holy Redeemer Health System have decided to end discussions regarding a potential partnership to create a larger health system. Together we had a bold vision that we believe would have served our community well. While we are disappointed, we believe this decision is in the best interest of both organizations. Abington Health and Holy Redeemer Health System will continue to seek opportunities to enhance the health of the communities we serve.

If the merger had gone through as planned, Abington would no longer have offered abortions out of respect for Holy Redeemer's Catholic mission. With the proposed merger off however, Abington will likely continue to offer abortions, though this has not been officially confirmed by the hospital.

Abington Health is one of the largest employers in Montgomery County with more than 6,100 workers. Holy Redeemer, based in Huntingdon Valley, has more than 4,600 employees.
