Abduction Hoax Mom Slapped With Fraud Charges

Federal investigation finds woman stole more than $700K

Bonnie Sweeten may be serving jail time related to her false abduction, but she now faces federal fraud and theft charges.

Sweeten, 39, was indicted Thursday on 23-counts including fraud, identity theft, money laundering and making false statements.

The U.S. Attorney's Office alleges the mother of three stole more than $700,000 from clients, co-workers and the law firm where she worked.

Prosecutors say Sweeten also forged names, used altered driver's licenses and passports and created false documents including a court order and power of attorney forms.

The Feasterville, Pa. woman allegedly used the stolen money to buy clothes, jewelry, electronics, pay for trips and make mortgage payments.

Sweeten will be transferred into federal custody next week, FBI officials say. She's been locked up in a Bucks County prison serving a nine to 23 month sentence for identity theft since August.

Last May, Sweeten made a fake 911 call saying she and her daughter had been kidnapped and locked in the trunk of a car. As police went on a frenzied search, she actually fled to Disney World using the ID of a co-worker.

Florida authorities took the woman and her unsuspecting daughter into custody during a sting at the Grand Floridian Resort inside Disney World.

A federal investigation into Sweetens alleged thefts began after she told authorities her world "imploded on May 26 when I realized I could not repay the funds I stole."

Calls to her attorney were not returned.
