ATV Rider Leaves Scene of Crash: Woman

A local woman says an ATV rider who crashed into her car left the scene of the accident with the help of other people.

A local woman is speaking out for the first time about a case that police have labeled “unsolvable.”

On May 19, the woman, who wants to remain anonymous, witnessed a man lose control of his ATV and crash into the back of her car along Belmont Mansion Drive. It’s illegal to ride an ATV in the streets of Philadelphia. The man was thrown from the vehicle and landed on the grass.

“I got my phone, called 911 and called rescue because I saw him laid out,” said the woman.

The woman also recorded the aftermath of the accident with her cell phone. It’s during that recording when she says she witnessed a series of events that left her confused and angry.

“He got on the phone and made a phone call,” said the woman. “30 seconds to a minute after, three cars pulled up. One was a white pickup truck, one was a blue pickup truck and one was a blue minivan.”

The woman’s video shows a group of men loading the damaged ATV onto the back of a white Dodge Ram truck and taking off before officers arrive.

“They left, cleaned the scene and picked up everything before the cops arrived,” said the woman. “They had everything except for a broom and a dust pan! No one said a word to me. They walked past me. Their main concern was to clean up the scene and get out of there.”

The woman managed to record the license plate number of the white truck and report it to police. While investigators were able to track down the owner of the white truck they still don’t know who owns the ATV. Since no one was seriously injured, and no towing was required, the incident is considered a non-reportable accident.

The woman says she never imagined that it would be so difficult to solve the case considering all the information she provided. For now she’s stuck without a car for at least a month. The person responsible is still out there.

“I don’t even think they’re trying,” said the woman. “Does someone actually have to get hurt for the police to do anything? I don’t know.”
